Mission
The Matt Gardner Homestead Museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the African American experience from slavery to freedom through the life and legacy of Matt Gardner.

Vision
The vision of the Matt Gardner Homestead Museum is to encourage lifelong learning by engaging audiences of all ages in an educational and memorable historical experience about those African Americans, and their communities, who lived and worked in the rural South by:

  • Providing a venue for interpreting life on a rural farmstead in middle Tennessee during the late 19th and early 20th century.
  • Accurately exploring Matt Gardner's transition from slavery through Reconstruction and into the early 20th century.
  • Interpreting the places where Matt Gardner worked and lived, including Dixontown, Elkton, and the surrounding communities.
  • Offering educational programming and special events related to the Matt Gardner Homestead Museum and the surrounding communities.
  • Following professional museum standards and practices.
  • Pursuing excellence in research and interpretation.
